Bio production, where fossil fuels as the main product components are replaced by sustainable sources, is the way to go in the future.

Problem

Right now, we rely on fossil fuels. They are the basis of the products we produce, unpack, use and get rid of - anything from food to cancer drugs. Fossil fuels surround us. And we need out.

Fossil fuels cause climate change and will change our lives forever. Recently in Europe, we also see that our dependence on fossil fuels is a tool of war and affects our security.

Solution

Bio production, where fossil fuels as the main product component are replaced by sustainable sources, is part of the answer. It will reduce net emissions, help us to address the enormous footprint of industries across the world, and help achieve a more circular economy.

“The biobased chemicals and materials industry has reached a tipping point, with several processes ready for scale-up in the upcoming years. Several strong forces, including mitigating global warming, realising a truly circular economy, consumer preference, corporate commitment, and government mandates and support, are driving development in this area. However, relatively low oil prices, the absence of a carbon tax in many places, trade wars, as well as lack of consistency in policy and legislation, slows down the deployment."

- IEA, Bio Energy outlook, 2020

Many industries, such as pharma, food and nutrition, rely on fossil fuels as their main product component. However, the Danish pharma and food sector is home to world-leading companies with the willpower and skills to lead the shift towards green production.

Bio Solutions Zealand will create the framework and fund investments for developing, testing and scaling biotechnology products and solutions, including laboratory equipment and production facilities. The project is part of a political reform package and will allocate 500 million DKK to projects.

Bio Solutions Zealand draws on its experience from creating the world's first industrial symbiosis with a circular approach to production. The Kalundborg Symbiosis is a partnership between 14 public and private companies and was developed in 1972. The principle of industrial symbiosis is that a waste stream in one company becomes a resource in another company, which benefits both the environment and the economy.

Part of the solution is circularity, which will help reach the net zero emissions target across the entire value chain by 2045.

"In 10 years, Biosolutions Zealand will have created a world-renowned regional ecosystem that contributes to significant growth and development within the Danish food and bioresources cluster. At the same time, the project contributes to the green transition towards bio-based and climate-neutral production worldwide'. The stronghold for biosolutions is a natural consequence of the fact that we in the Zealand region have seen the industry flourish over a number of years. But we have lacked a fixed point that can link actors together both regionally and nationally, but also to the rest of the world. Now we have that, and we expect that Biosolutions Zealand will lift a wide range of industries in the region"

- Mads Váczy Kragh, CEO of Business Hub Zealand
